By peace | October 5, 2006

The Poodle is believed to originate in Germany. It is an old breed. The Poodle descended from Asian herding dogs and which were brought to Europe by the Goths, a federation of German tribes. The word “Pudel” means “to splash in water” in German. Originally The Poodle was known as a German Water Dog. Later Poodles became popular in France and is now considered the national dog of France. Several other European countries has also claimed the Poodle as their own breed.

Poodle are clever, quick to learn and quick-to-please. They make an excellent companion. The breed needs lots of exercise. The ability of Poodles to learn is considered exceptional. Poodles are faster than any other breed at discovering that spoken words mean something and they are thought to understand more spoken words. Many Poodle owners believe that Poodles actually come close to understanding grammar and whole sentences rather that just single words.

The poodle is well-proportioned and elegant. There are the Standard Poodle, the Miniature Poodle, the Toy Poodle. Height of the Standard Poodle is over 15 inches at the highest point of the shoulders, the Miniature Poodle is 15 inches or under, the Toy Poodle is 10 inches or under. All three varieties come in a plethora of solid colors including white, silver, blue, grey, brown, apricot, red, cream, and black. Only solid colors are acceptable. The coat doesn’t shed.

Poodles are very active, intelligent and elegant-appearing dog, squarely built, well proportioned, moving soundly and carrying himself proudly. Properly clipped in the traditional fashion and carefully groomed, the Poodle has about him an air of distinction and dignity peculiar to himself.

Grooming of Poodles is one of the most expensive aspects of care. It is a good idea to start early for your puppy to get adjusted for the procedure. The AKC standard allows many different kinds of grooming styles. The choice is predetermined by the activity a Poodle is involved in and your desire to spend long hours caring for its coat. Whatever the trim choice, remember that your Poodle needs to be trimmed not only to look proper but also to maintain its health.

The coat needs a lot of care. Regular brushing and combing is an absolute must to avoid tangles. Poodles are usually trimmed. The trimming requires certain skills and it is not cheap one. There are four Poodles “haircuts”: Puppy, sporting, English saddle, or continental.

Poodles’ haircuts evolved into some of the more ornate and elaborate incarnations we see today when the animals gained popularity in France, particularly in the 18th century under the reign of Louis XVI. Poodles, especially the smaller varieties, were popular with the nobility, who would mold the little dogs’ hair into extravagant styles, sometimes mimicking the ornate pompadours that French men and women wore themselves at the time.

Poodles are usually easy to train. They are very playful and can obtain the basic obedience skills during play. Poodles are friendly with other dogs. Therefore, breed owners can walk their dogs in a company of other dog fanciers. Though smaller breed versions are likely to bark much, they are not aggressive. Breed owners can rest assured that their Poodles will not start a fight with other dogs.
