Life’s Sufferings

By peace | December 19, 2006

The more you gain in this world, the more sufferings you’re likely to have. By gaining, you must have mental preparation of losing.

Life is not easy. We have to work hard for life. You want a happy life you need to fight for it. When you have a happy life, you need to pay for it. How sad life can be then. Why do people still want to carry on with life and bring more life on earth? Animals probably do not know about all these, for that is nature’s way of reproduction, to ensure the survival of the same species forever. But humans have a more developed brain. They are capable of logical thinkind, deep thoughts and imagination. If life is so much of sufferings, why bring more life on earth? There is no hard and fast rules to life. You create your own destiny. You create your own fate.

I found this topic at Helium which inspired me to write about:

How to accept aging, sickness and the possibility of death
Aging, sickness and death are natural process of life. From birth, we are destined to reach the path of death. Most people would go through the path of old age and sickness before they come to the path of death. However for minority of people, misfortune can happen to them and they never get to the path of old age. For instance, we have children who fell down from their flats or they were being choked to death by their own toys. Still others choose to end their life at an early age, due to personal problems or other problems of life which they cannot cope with. The last possible group of people who walked on the journey of life to death are those who are young and sick and die at an young age.

From birth, the ultimate destiny of life is death. It is a fact. When there is life, there is death. When there is love, there is hatred. When there is happiness, there is sadness and grief. When there is merry-making occasion such as the birth of babies or Christmas Celebration, there is also mournful occasion for you to weep over such as the death of our loved ones or Good Friday (for christian). We know all these will happen at a time, we do not know when and what will happen, yet, people cannot resist love, temptation and to enjoy life. By reproducing, they give rise to more birth and eventually to more death.

Humans are kind by nature. We are social animals who are capable of love and care. So it is natural that we will love our families and friends, including our pets! Humans bring joy and sufferings to themselves. They choose their own destinies. They bring lives on earth when they get married, make love and give birth. They gain happiness in the process, but they are indirectly causing pain too. Pain when they experience when their loved ones die one day. Pain when they cannot bare to leave the loved ones behind when they are destined to die. Sufferings like this is all because of our hearts. Our hearts cannot bare to leave our loved ones, we love them, and care for them. When we leave them, we do not know what will happen to them. On the other hand, we do not want to leave our loved ones, for what they had contributed to us. Our loved ones might be our parents, they had spent their precious time on us, we want to spend our life, repaying them, we want them to be by our side always, and be filial to them.

Attachment and desire is the greatest attribute to pain and suffering of mankind.
When the intensity of attachment and desire (love) for a person is more, we experience more happiness and also more pain and sufferings too. For instance, when you spend time with your loved ones, you are most happy. However, when you are with people you don’t love, you are not happy. So life works such that you have to pay for something that you like. When you experience happiness, sadness will come one day as well. The same intensity of happiness you experience, you will need to pay back the same intensity of pain and grieve.

Everybody want to look beautiful. When age catches up with us, some people cannot accept the fact and they are sad every year when they get old by a year. People who cannot accept aging, who have the signs of aging like wrinkles and spots on their face, look for ways and means to conceal the signs of aging. By doing so, they might feel better when they ‘look younger’. However, the price they need to pay is money, time and health.

Nothing is free in this world. There is no free meals. You may take ‘loans’ but ultimately the ‘loan shark’ will come after you if you delay your payments. To accept the fact of aging, sickness and death in life, we need to know how life works . I have explained that above. But it is natural that we feel sad when we see our loved ones aging and then sick one day and die another day. To be sad and accepting it are two separate issue. Some people are sad and depressed when their loved ones are gone. They cannot accept the fact and they are ‘obsessed’ with negative thoughts and ‘imagined’ their loved ones still exist, sometimes developing illusion and hallucination results.

It is normal to be sad when the loved ones die, and allowing a time for mourning and after that you have to know that life still goes on. You have to carry on with life. There are other responsibilities for you to fulfill. By telling yourself that that is a fact of life, and there are other important task and other loved ones awaiting for you, you will feel better.

In addition, we can tell ourself that since life is so hard — painful and suffering, isn’t it good for your loved ones to end their suffering earlier and to be united with God earlier?

Acceptance of aging, sickness and death all come from our mental power. When you know fully well how life works (as explain above), and when you know that death of somebody is not the end of everything, as there are still other loved ones awaiting for you too, you know that you cannot afford to ‘not accept’ these facts. The price of ‘not accepting’ is you are letting the other ‘active’ loved ones down. When you are obsessed with grieve for the lost of loved ones, or obsessed with sadness over your aging and sickness, you are letting your other loved ones down when you are not able to contribute any ’service’ to them.

Life is all about ’service’ to people. Service means doing some form of work to help people. Regardless of what service you do, there will always be of values and meaning to people. Thus work is all about service too! When you stop service, your values drop.

So, to accept aging, sickness and death, you need to accept the fact that life works naturally in this way! You need to pay a price to have an enjoyable meal. The meal may be good (happiness, birth etc), though you hate to see it half gone (aging, sickness ) or even completely gone (death) — you do not wish to end the beauty, and also to accept death, but remember, there are other meal awaiting you. You need to pay for this meal, after you have finished, even if you have not finished, the time will come when the restaurant need to be closed! Other meals are available at other restaurant if you like. If you want other meal from the same restaurant also can.

Remember, when one door shuts, another door opens. Aging is a door shuts to youth. Another door for old age opens. The door for good health close and the door for sickness opens. The door for life close when the door for death opens. Submit your fate when it comes. Do your best to provide your service to people, take good care of your health, and accept the parts and parcel of life.
