New Spectacles

By peace | April 17, 2007

The history of spectacles can be traced back to a time even before they were fully understood. Marco Polo reported the Chinese using spectacles in the late thirteenth century. They were apparently also in use by the Italians at about the same time.

Up to the mid 1900, almost all lenses were made from glass. Today, lenses can be made of glass or plastic. Plastic lenses have found increased usage for good reasons. They are lighter and less susceptible to breakage. Some high-fashion frames with large lens fronts can only be fitted with plastic lenses. They can easily tinted and coated with ultra violet light blocking agents. Hence, they are popularly used in sunglasses. But there are some disadvantages. Plastic lenses scratch easily. Because of their lower refractive index, they tend to be rather thick at the rims. This may be cosmetically undesirable especially for the higher powered lenses. However, recent technological advances have developed high refractive index plastics and scratch-resistant coatings for plastic lenses.

Since young, I have been wearing spectacles. I have worn many types of spectacles — plastic frames, metal frames and half-frames and full-frames types. The lenses also comes in many varieties — multi-coated, to prevent UV rays and reflection, plastic lenses or glass lenses.

I have got used to those who multi-coated, it looks nice and I do not get to see so much of reflection too. As for a choice of plastic or glass, I would still choose glass, though the optician told me it is lighter. A few years back, my degree is about 500 – 600 degrees. I got really tired of wearing glasses as it is heavy and tiring to wear spectacles. So I tried making a titanium frame spectacles with plastic lenses — superhigh index. That is the first time I spent so much money making that piece of spectacles. On the day of collection, I was saddened by the sight of it. There were lines to be seen at the side of the lenses. It was so ugly. The lens are so thick! It was not totally light after all! The next day, I quickly went to make another pair of spectacles. I never wear that spectacles at all. It was a total waste of money.

Recently I made a new spectacles. My degree has dropped. Now it is so much thinner. After the previous incident, this time no matter how the optician told me, I do not want to make plastic lenses. It is much cheaper to make glasses one too. I had a long time choosing the spectacles that I like. I do not like colourful ones and I do not like too fanciful ones. I like those with spring and plain, preferably silver or dark colour. There wasn’t any silver coloured frame that I like. In the end, I chose a bronze coloured spectacles. My degree has dropped about 100! I was surprised indeed!

I needed to be prescribed with astigmatism but I told them I do not want it. And now my new spectacles though not so straining to the eye, still appear a bit blur in the right eye. My left eye has no problem at all. So far I have not found one glasses which I like and perfectly suit my eyesight. Wearing contact lens is the best. However, I have reduced wearing nowadays.
