Seeking Inspiration

Where do creative people such as writers, artists, designers and composers find inspiration? What gets creative thinkers past the blank sheet of paper?
How creative people think, work and find inspiration? Most people find inspiration through their daily simple lifestyles — their surrounding people and things around them. Different people are motivated and inspired by different things. But generally, all the common features of creative people have a collection of their favourite things. They collect things which are of beauty, special values, colours, aesthetics and shapes to them. They keep scrapbooks, sketching books, ideas books and so on. They collect their favourite items such as bottles, match boxes, stones, heritage toys, arts, paintings, crystals, shoes, and many other things. Some even collect newspapers, cans and some other things which people consider ‘trash’, but they are really ‘good’ things that can be recycled and make into various ‘unique’ items out of them, through the hands and minds of creative thinkers!
Ideas are very important when it comes to creative thinking. We always want our ideas to be unique and original. There need to be plenty of reference material and many different things around you to really inspire you. Depending on their area of interest, different creative people are fascinated by different things. Some creative thinkers might be fascinated by fashion, while some others can be obsessed with music and films. Besides browsing through their collection of scrapbooks, photographs album to gain inspiration, some of the great creative thinkers also go out for a walk in the park, go window shopping, visit fashion shops or toy shops to gain the latest ideas and to seek their inspiration from there.
Besides things around them, people around them is a great inspiration for most creative people. Most of the time, their love for the nature, their love for their family, the people around them, such as their children, are a great inspiration for them — by observing people around them, listening to what people talking, watching how people behave and so on. Sometimes inspiration just strike when people are at work or just chatting with their colleagues and friends or playing with their children.
Where work is concerned, there are various styles how these creative people work. But generally, creative people are surrounded by things. Just like any other people, they need a clean and tidy environment to work with. A ‘clean’ or ‘empty’ desk is important. It allows you to ‘create’ ideas and things out from the empty space. While some people enjoy peace and quietness in their working environment, choosing to work alone or not to be disturbed, some other creative people love to work in groups. They love the company of people around them. Some people play music while at work too.
In summary, inspiration is everywhere. If your favourite is reading, books can inspire you. If you enjoy travelling, you can get inspiration as well. When you travel, you may suddenly find yourself open to impressions in a completely different way. You can sit on a terrace in Italy and stare at a saltcellar and think it looks absolutely fantastic. Then, when you’re back home, you may realise that they have exactly the same saltcellar in your local restaurant, but you just had not noticed it there.
