Metal Care At Home

By peace | May 30, 2007

Cleaning and Polishing Metals

Choose a polish designed especially for the metal that needs cleaning. Otherwise you could damage an item’s finish.

An old cotton sock makes an ideal polishing cloth. Use one side to apply polish, the other side to buff.

Be sure to wipe away or rinse off all traces of polish after an item has been cleaned. Any residue that remains will only hasten tarnishing.

Brass
Outdoor brasses will stay nice and bright if you apply a thin coat of paste wax after polishing them. For indoor brasses, use lemon oil.

Here’s a homemade polish you can use on slightly tarnished brass. Combine equal parts of salt, flour, and vinegar in a small bowl. Rub the paste on the object with a soft cloth. Because salt is corrosive, be sure to rinse the piece thoroughly before buffing it.
