Shades, Blinds Or Shutters
By peace | June 20, 2007

Consider shades as a first covering for drafty windows. Pleated shades are usually all or almost all polyester, because this fabric retains a pleat better than practically any other fiber. Sometimes a small amount of another fiber, such as acrylic or linen, will be added to vary the texture of the shade. Usually custom ordering is required for the more interesting patterns and materials.
If you have an unusual window, such as a skylight, bay window, or window with a rounded top, pleated shades may be the best answer. Treatments for arched windows generally utilize two shades, a stationary, fan-shaped shade to cover the upper arch and a standard operating shade to cover the operative part of the window. A bottom-up pleated shade pulls up instead of down and can screen an unattractive view and provide privacy while still admitting plenty of light.
Blinds can be made of wood, metal, plastic or fabric. One of their greatest advantages is the ability to screen the interior from view while still admitting a view, air, and light. Blinds offer a good control of light for sleeping or watching television. Though most blinds have horizontal slats, vertical blinds expand the options and are a treatment of choice with sliding doors and windows. When first introduced, vertical blinds were made of hard materials such as metal and PVC. But recently, hundreds of colours and textures have been made available in fabrics that range from lightweight sheers to heavy tapestry-light blockers.
Old-fashioned shutters on the inside of a window are a good choice when you need to keep the glare of the sun out. Adjustable slats can create the best of two worlds: control of sun entry and an opportunity to see the view by slanting the slats. Hardboard panels with a latticework or sheer fabric insert are other unusual but interesting window treatments. Consider shutters in painted, natural, or stained wood not only for modern interiors but whenever you want a neat and unobtrusive window covering.
