Why Choose A Bird?

By peace | August 10, 2007

My first pet is a bird, a chicken. I had kept both birds and chicken in my childhood days. I fed them, looked after them and changed the newspaper myself. The birds are intelligent animals. They know how to respond to our command too.

Before you decide to bring a conure into your life, you will need to consider a few questions. Do you like animals? Do you have the time to care for one properly? Can you live with a little mess (seed hulls, feathers and discarded food) in your home? Can you tolerate, and appreciate, a little noise as part of your daily routine? If your answer is yes to all these questions, then you can keep a bird.

Why do you want to keep a bird? Bird has a small size. This makes them good pets for today’s smaller living spaces. Many people are living in apartments, flats, and condominiums, which makes it inconvenient to keep a large pet who needs a yard and lots of regular exercise. Birds just seem to fit better in apartments, flats and condominiums or other smaller living spaces.

Birds interact well with their owners. Although a bird is not as blindly loyal as the average dog, he is far more interactive than a fish, a hamster and even a guinea pig. In addition, many birds can learn to whistle or talk, which is unique among pets and which many bird owners find amusing and entertaining.

Birds require consistent, but not constant, attention. This can be a plus for today’s busy single people and families. Although birds cannot be ignored all day, they are content to entertain themselves for part of the day while their owners are busy elsewhere.

The needs and companionship of a bird provide a reason to get up in the morning. The value of this cannot be overestimated for older bird owners and single people who are on their own. Birds provide all the benefits of the human-animal bond, including lower blood pressure and reduced levels of stress.

Finally, birds are intelligent pets. They are smart animals. Some parrots have their intelligence levels comparable to those of chimpanzees, dolphins and preschool-age children.

When you are ready to choose a bird, you can get a conure from bird breeders or from bird specialty stores.
