Father’s Scar

By peace | August 13, 2007

This is my father. He is a man with great business mind. He used to run his own company and he has only primary school education. He did not have any financial consolidation software or computer knowledge at all to help him with accounting and administrative work. He did everything himself and also engaging the help from other people. He managed his work and family well. He is a responsible man. He never fails to care for his employees and his responsibilities towards his clients. Now, my father is retired. Every day, he would go to his gardens to care for his plants and vegetables. He loves gardening. Not only does he grew medicinal plants, he also grow bananas. Our family and my brother and sister’s families always have a constant supplies of bananas. At times, when his peanuts are matured enough to produce groundnuts, he bring them home for my mother to cook. He also grow sweet potatoes and tapioca. We often get to eat sweet potatoes leaves and tapioca too. They are my among my favourite when especially I am so sick of eating the same food everyday.

There was one time when my father got himself ‘injured’ while plucking bananas. While he was standing under the banana tree or the banana plant to cut down the bunch of bananas, the banana tree had its latex dripped onto his face. It was lucky that none of the latex dripped into his eyes. The latex touched his cheeks, his side of the right nose. I think the latex must be very ’strong’, I do not know how it feels. I heard him saying it was itchy and pain. He normally does not like to see doctor. He always self-medicate. But for this time, he could not take the pain. On that day itself, he went to see doctor. The doctor gave him injection and cream to apply on the spots affected. For a few days he stayed at home, because he face was very ugly with all the ‘burned spots’ from the banana tree latex. After a week when I saw him, there were still brown patches of scar left on his face. He looked so pathetic and pitiful with that condition. Until now, there was one five-cent coin size of scar left on his face. I wonder if they would be gone eventually one day.
