Conure Health Concern
By peace | August 15, 2007

To help your veterinarian and to protect your pet form long-term health problems, keep a close eye on the conure daily activities and appearance. If something suddenly changes in the way the conure looks or acts, contact your veterinarian immediately.
Birds naturally hide signs of illness to protect themselves from predators, so by the time a bird looks or acts sick, he may already be dangerously ill. Some signs of illness are listed below. If your birds shows any of these signs, please contact your veterinarian immediately.
Signs of Illness
- a fluffed-up appearance
- loss of appetite
- sleeping all the time
- a change in appearance or number of droppings
- weight loss
- listlessness
- drooping wings
- lameness
- parially eaten food stuck on the face or food has been regurgitated onto the cage floor
- laboured breathing, with or without tail bobbing
- runny eyes or nose
- stops whistling, talking or singing

Conure’s Abnormal Behaviour
- sleeping too much
- sitting with feathers fluffed for long periods of time, even on warm days
- listlessness
- lack of appetite
- regurgitating whole seeds
- loss of balance or inability to perch
- feather picking
- feather chewing
If your conure shows signs of any of the above behaviours, make an appointment wtih your avian veterinarian because they can indicate illness in a pet bird.
Other pets can be harmful to your conure’s health too. A curious cat could claw or bite the conure, a dog could step on him accidentally or bite him, or another, larger bird could break her leg or rip off his upper mandible with his beak. If your conure tangles with another pet in your home, contact your avian veterinarian immediately because emergency treatment (bacterial infection from a puncture wound or shock from being stepped on or suffering a broken bone) may required to save your conure’s life.

We live in Devon, UK. My sun Conure used to have bright white rings around her eyes, but about four months ago, when my Dad was doing something to the car engine, she decided to take a look and became a little grubby! The white area has now become virtually black! Was this a coincidence or has the oil stained her skin? How could a stain have spread all around her eyes? She’s showing no sign of distress, she isn’t itching herself, her eyes aren’t watering and her skin isn’t inflamed. She’s eating well and loves the family.(She’s such a curious bird and loves to fly around our neighbourhood while ruling the airspace!) Please could you give me some sort of a clue as to what is wrong with her? Thank you very much, Lauren
