How Food Cause Disease
By peace | August 15, 2007

How do food cause disease? We all know that specific food or types of food can be bad for your health: sweet food may cause diabetes, salt may cause hypertension, and saturated fats may cause heart disease. In traditional Chinese Medicine, the role of food is somewhat different. The way food are eaten, the combination of food, and even eating habits may cause disease.
Irregular eating habits may cause disorders to the digestive system. The general rule is that you should eat only when hungry, drink only when thirsty, and stop eating when 80% full. Eating the wrong food under the wrong circumstances may cause diseases. When the body is in a particular state, certain food may cause harm, particularly when you are ill. If you eat hot spicy food such as pepper, cloves and garlic while you have a high fever, a sore throat, constipation, or skin eruptions with red lesions, you are eating the wrong food under the wrong circumstances, because such food will intensify your symptoms.
Eating food inconsistent with your physical constitution may also cause disease even though you are not really sick at the time. A specific food may be good for one physical constitution but bad for another, which means that the value of food should be judged according to each individual’s physical constitution.
