Victorian Home
By peace | September 12, 2007

For a brief period following the Civil War (about 1880-1910), the clean lines and inherent simplicity of antebellum architecture were no longer in vogue. In burgeoning Southern cities like Savannah and Charleston, the style of choice became Victorian, a purely American concoction marked by asymmetrical layouts, intricate gingerbread trim, and vivid colours.

Queen Anne became the most prevalent variety of Victorian home, easily distinguishable by its textured shingles and dominant front-facing gable. Wildly eclectic and somewhat busy, it was a favourite of the urban upper classes, who were drawn to its ostentatious flair. In more rural areas, Gothic Revival was preferred, with both houses and churches bearing its steeply pitched roofs and fanciful trimwork.
