It is tempting to think of dog breeds as discrete categories, like apples and pears. However, what we conventionally call a breed is a group of dogs selectively bred to conform to a ‘breed standard’ — a set of ideal characteristics written by a breed club. While there are over 400 recognized breeds worldwide, the 20 most popular constitute almost half of all pedigree dogs, and the top 50 make up over 90% of all dogs.
