Rabbit Show Jumping
By peace | October 5, 2007

The practice of rabbit show jumping is definitely not cruel. The rabbits jump because they like it, and have been trained to do so using lots of praise and rewards. Any handler that is seen to push, jerk or kick his or her rabbit at a show jumping event will immediately be disqualified.
Rabbit show jumping is an increasingly popular sport in Scandinavia, with both children and adults taking part. To date, the sport does not exist in countries outside Scandinavia, but it is only a matter of time before it is adopted elsewhere.

Rabbit show jumping originated in Sweden during the early 1980s. Ironically, it all came about as a direct result of what some British children has been doing! The television programme, That’s Life, once screened a fun item about some children that had taught their pet rabbits to jump fences, like a miniature version of ‘real’ show jumping with horses. This clip was eventually shown as part of a Swedish children’s television programme, and it inspired a number of children to try this game out with their own pet rabbits. They were so successful that magazine articles were written about them, and when the number of ‘rabbit jumpers’ had grown large enough, rabbit show jumping was introduced as an attraction at rabbit shows and other pet shows.

More and more people started to get interested; rules for the competition were formally laid down, and clubs especially for this new sport were formed. The first ever Swedish Championship in rabbit show jumping took place in 1987, with sixty rabits competing. The following year the number had grown to one hundred and twenty, and today there are two thousand active rabbit jumpers all over Sweden, with as many as fifty clubs catering for their sport. The sport has also gained popularity in Norway and Denmark.

To start with, the sport was confined exclusively to children, but increasingly, adults are becoming involved. It is a highly popular spectator sport, and it has received a lot of coverage in the media. Organisers of large shows and exhibitions often feature rabbit show jumping as a major attraction.
