Cavalier King Charles Spaniel
By peace | October 9, 2007

Originated in Great Britain in the 1900s, Cavalier is warm, gentle, affectionate, and graceful. Its coat may be black and tan, ruby, tricolour, or Blenheim.

Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is the ideal urban dog. It is friendly, sporting, adaptable and prone to medical problems. The affable and energetic Cavalier is justifiably popular, partly because it is so accommodating to our moods. A Cavaliar is willing to curl up on a sofa in bad weather, but equally eager to walk and run for miles when the occasion arises. However, increasing demand for the dog has led to intensive in-beeding, which has caused substantial increases in lethal heart conditions. The life expectancy of affected dogs is reduced from 14 to just 9 years.

Physical Characteristics of Cavalier King Charles Spaniel
Head: Nearly flat between the ears. Well-developed lips.
Eyes: Large, round eyes contribute to the dog’s sweet, endearing expression.
Ears: Long, with plenty of feathering.
Body: Small and well-balanced with a regal appearance; moves with a slight wave.
Tail: Well-feathered.

History
In the 1920s, an American, Roswell Eldridge, offered a prize to anyone exhibiting King Charles Spaniels with long muzzles, as they appeared in Van Dyck’s paintings of King Charles II and his spaniels. By the 1940s, these dogs were classified as a unique breed and were given the prefix Cavalier, to differentiate them from their forebears.
