The Famous Four, The Beatles
The Beatles were an immensely popular rock music group who had more influence than any other group before or since. The drivng force in the group was John Lenon (1940-1980), a writer whose poetry came to express the feelings of a whole generation of young people. He formed his first group, the Quarrymen, in 1956. By 1960, the group had become the Beatles, and in 1962 its members were the four young men who rose to worldwide fame.
The famous four were Lennon, Paul McCartney(born 1942), George Harrison(1943-2001), and Ringo Starr (real name Richard Starkey, born 1940). Starr played the drums, the others electric guitars, and they all sang.
Lennon and McCartney wrote most of the Beatles’ songs, from the time when they performed in youth clubs in Liverpool until the group split up. Their early songs were love ballads, which combined good melodies with the strong beat that had already become the dominant feature of rock music. Later songs were an expression of social awareness, which endeared them even more to young people who could feel in the music the thoughts they themselves felt so deeply.
Success was engineered partly by their business manager, Brian Epstein, and after their first US tour in 1964, it was worldwide. But it brought its problems and eventually contributed to the end of the Beatles in 1970. By that time they were very rich and each then made a new career for himself.
Lennon’s career came to a tragic end on 8 December 1980, when a young man in a confused state of mind shot him dead in a street in New York City. Millions all over the world mourned him.
