Do you need the school in order to survive in this world? Do you need to attend school in order to learn to eat, sleep, play and interact with people? My mother did not go to school. Today, she may have a tougher life. She does not understand what people said when they converse in English and she was ‘cheated’ by the bank for not knowing how to read. She may not have a good life now, she has limited choice in getting a job. However, with her spirit, she never stops to learn. She always try to learn. She learn to speak Chinese, she learn to speak a few words of English, though that makes people laugh and she hardly ever can learn English, she learns other things like cooking, parenting, dealing with life’s hardships and pain herself. Do you get to learn parenting skills, life’s skills, money management and MORAL education from the school NOW?
Little children are now being ‘push’ to study and study and study, so that they can get good grades, so that they can enter the best school, the best universities and get the best job. Everybody see you according to grades! You say is not grades?? But the leader is showing it yet again! The teachers will fight among themselves, competition, who can teach better to get the highest bonus and payrise! What are you teaching us? Saying that grades are not important, just let the children ‘participate’ in the class, let them learn the basic subjects, grades does not matter? If that is how you reassure us, then show me how can we be assured?
How can you have better teachers simply with such system? It will work definitely, and it would be fair. Who am I to win the thoughts of Lawyers and the PHDS. But we are just people at the bottom of the mountains, with our real voice calling out to those people ON TOP who do not understand the lives of the people LIVING at the BOTTOM. THE PEOPLE ON TOP can only see and hear from people NEAR the top. IF the people never go to the BOTTOM and experience the LIVES of the BOTTOM people, how are they to be sure and KNOW what everybody feels? NOT everybody is AT THE TOP. But how many people are at the BOTTOM?
If you are going to continue with such a pace, your technology is better, advancing well. Your future children will be educated. But can they be good citizens? Can they be future good husband and wife? I see the people around me. The children could be brighter, but have you done a proper survey, are the children happy? Are our children really CHILDREN or are they ‘little adults’? Do they need to be forced to do so much things when they have so long a road to walk still? Can we have an educational system where you let children ENJOY childhood, let children and BUSY parents get to ENJOY some memorable YEARS with our children, and so FAMILY lives? There are advantages to this. Teachers have a slower pace of teaching, teachers get to ENJOY teaching, they are not too stressful and EVERYBODY get a better life.
Having said that, does not mean that there are no studying, teachers get paid for enjoying life. NO, music, arts, moral education, English, Maths, Science, Social Studies, Mother Tongue as usual, but what I mean is you do not have to teach in SUCH DETAILS as compared now with those years. Children now have to learn more things, year after year. This year, calculators. Fine if you say that is change for the better, but you ADD, did you SUBTRACT? They are so many things to learn and read for the children! How many teachers themselves have children and their own family lives as well? Sometimes teachers are not bad teachers, but they are just frustrated with having TOO MUCH to teach with so little time. Children with wrong attitudes they have to correct, children who are slow, they have to slow down. Children who are fast, they have to cater to them. Otherwise, how to handle the class of pupils?
What you teach today, you will get the result in future. You want more babies, you don’t want to see more abortions, you do not want to see more crimes, and more divorce, then what have you done to solve all these problems? Learning more English, Maths, Science, Mother Tongue, MUSIC, Arts, Social Studies or Health Education? I look at my children’s books, Moral Education if any, I cannot remember, 好公民 (good citizen) was new and clean. That was not a tested subject at all, NEVER was tested.
Look at our educational system. What is really EDUCATION? Children that grows up thinking that MONEY is easy to earn, MONEY is what they are looking for in LIFE? I DO NOT want to teach my children such NONSENSE, but I AM FORCED to do so. Just like the Christmas gifts. If we do not comply then we will be abnormal people! If you regard the nation as a FAMILY, do you not think of what the people at the bottom feels?
I would love to see my children grow up to be good mothers and fathers, they have a happy marriage and they can have a job to sustain their lifestyle. If you are hardworking, any professions are respectable professions. Even cleaners can be trained to be better cleaners. Our cleaners are ignorant cleaners. If you really want a better environment, the cleaners can be trained to be professional cleaners. Can you imagine cleaners with certificate and diplomas? Paper society. Without such paper, how to know if you are good cleaner or bad cleaner? Who can trust you?
Can a beggar teach the Millionaires how to get rich? Cannot. But the beggar can teach the Millionaires what is honesty and what is humanity. Everyone can be a teacher. A beggar can teach his children. A beggar can have his own friends and social circle. If you think that whatever the millionaires did are right, you are never wrong, then show me that the earth will not perish one day. Can you do that?
