Fun With Numbers
By peace | July 31, 2008
The Chinese always regards number to be ‘lucky’ or ‘unlucky’ especially when it comes to buying properties. This is called superstitious. For example, when buying house and even when it comes to choosing date for operation or moving house, they would avoid the number four, because 4 means death (as it sound like death, the chinese word 死 si, and four 四 also pronounce si, but different tone). The numbers 1314 on the other hand, can means one life time in chinese 一生一 世.
The number three on the other hand, means life, as what I had learned at Mount Elizabeth Hospital. The number three or 三 (chinese) has the same pronunciation as 山(mountain) and in Cantonese, 三 and 生 (meaning birth) have the same pronunciation. For this reason, the operating theatre at Mount Elizabeth Hospital is constructed on the third floor of the building.
I am never superstitious, despite the fact that my parents might be. I only believe in what I see and what I read when I was young. I have seen so many things in my family. My family buys 4D and they gamble (play cards, play Mahjong — as a hobby). As such, I learn gambling and I ‘learn’ to place bets as well!
When gambling, people are very superstitious too. They do not like you to mention about books 书 (shu), which have the same pronunciation as lose in chinese. For the gamblers and business people, they always like the number 8 which means 发 as in 发 财 etc.
The number 9, 九(jiu) in chinese means everlasting. Same pronunciation as 9, 久 (jiu) means everlasting or very long. When people see numbers with 99, it means 长长久久.
Chinese ‘plays’ alot with numbers. See something only, and they always want to strike it rich in lottery or anything. They would always want to guess the meaning of the things and equate that to numbers and then buy 4D, hoping to get the right number. Sometimes, to write faster, as in shorthand, people can write 174 as means ‘together die’ in chinese. 88 can mean bye bye also. The number 9 in Teochew or Hokkien is pronounce ‘Gao’ and the number 8 can be ‘mispronounced’ as ‘fuck’. Together, 89 means ‘fuck Gao’ which means ‘fuck the dog’.
My birth day is 8 September (8/9), the opposite of National Day, 9 August (9/8). Since my memory is poor, I had always remembered my birthday as the opposite of the national day of Singapore and vice versa……
I love DOG and someone told me I am ‘Daughter of God’…. and this is how I got to discover God and to love God, the wonder of his creation, the wonder of his mind, everything…
I tell you, all the birthdays of the people around me, my family and my own family, are all of special date. All these are no mere coincidence, but they are all ACCORDING to GOD’s PLAN….
The number 8 and 9 are special, just as the number 11.
The founding of Singapore by Sir Stamford Raffles was 1819. My birthday 8/9. He was born 5th July 1781 and died on the same day 5th July 1826… He died on a flight of stairs. I always dreamed of climbing stairs or walking down the stairs before my ‘transformation’, before my ‘knowledge of God’. Now, everything is clear…….
This is the type of junk which I dreamed of also… and I found this inside the book of Raffles… This is so interesting now.

[…] Flipping through the Straits Times, I came to the obituary, something which interest me… It was the name and the date and the quotes which aroused me. The page contains all the dead on 11th August 2008, with only a few on other dates, like 7th August, 10th August and no one on 8th August 2008 on that day (8.8.08, the ‘auspicious day). […]
