Eric Clapton - Tears in Heaven (City of Angels)
Tears In Heaven
by Eric Clapton and Will Jennings
Would you know my name
If I saw you in heaven?
Would it be the same
If I saw you in heaven?
I must be strong
And carry on,
‘Cause I know I don’t belong
Here in heaven.
Would you hold my hand
If I saw you in heaven?
Would you help me stand
If I saw you in heaven?
I’ll find my way
Through night and day,
‘Cause I know I just can’t stay
Here in heaven.
Time can bring you down,
Time can bend your knees.
Time can break your heart,
Have you begging please, begging please.
Beyond the door,
There’s peace I’m sure,
And I know there’ll be no more
Tears in heaven.
Would you know my name
If I saw you in heaven?
Would it be the same
If I saw you in heaven?
I must be strong
And carry on,
‘Cause I know I don’t belong
Here in heaven.
‘Cause I know I don’t belong
Here in heaven.
Eric Patrick Clapton, CBE (born 30 March 1945), is an English blues-rock guitarist, singer, songwriter and composer. He is “probably most famous for his mastery of the Stratocaster guitar”. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of The Yardbirds, of Cream, and as a solo performer. Often viewed by critics and fans alike as one of the greatest guitarists of all time, Clapton was ranked fourth in Rolling Stone Magazine’s list of the “100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time” and #53 on their list of the Immortals: 100 Greatest Artists of All Time.
“Tears in Heaven” is a *ballad written by Eric Clapton and Will Jennings about the pain Clapton felt following the 1991 death of his four-year-old son, Conor, who fell from a 53rd-story window in his mother’s friend’s New York City condominium. Clapton had been on tour and upon returning to his son, he was greeted from a distance by him as he waited by the window. Unfortunately, despite Clapton’s son’s excitement, he was never able to greet is father as he leaped into the direction of the large window. By all accounts, the death was simply a tragic accident, and Clapton was distraught for months afterwards. This song is one of Clapton’s most successful, reaching #2 on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart in the U.S. The song also spent three weeks at #1 on the American adult contemporary chart in 1992.
Clapton’s grief was expressed in the song “Tears in Heaven” (on the soundtrack to the 1991 movie Rush) and “Circus”, which was co-written by Will Jennings. He received a total of six Grammies that year for the single “Tears in Heaven” and the Unplugged album.
Clapton wrote the song with Will Jennings, who was reluctant at first to help him with such a personal song. The song was initially featured on the soundtrack to the film Rush, and it won three Grammy awards for Song of the Year, Record of the Year and Male Pop Vocal Performance in 1993. It was also included on Clapton’s Grammy award-winning album, Unplugged. It is #353 on Rolling Stone’s Top 500 Songs.
*A ballad is a poem usually set to music; thus, it often is a story told in a song. Any myth form may be told as a ballad, such as historical accounts or fairy tales in verse form. It usually has foreshortened, alternating four-stress lines (”ballad meter”) and simple repeating rhymes, often with a refrain.
If it is based on a political or religious theme, a ballad may be a hymn. It should not be confused with the ballade, a 14th and 15th century French verse form.
This is so touching, and it is really unbelievable… The name of God is HOLY indeed, very holy….. I am very sad as I listen to this song.
