Rain Chain
By peace | February 4, 2010

Rain chains not only transform a plain gutter downspout into a pleasing water feature, it also beautify and add styles to the garden.
Rain Chains come in various size, patterns and even materials. They were originally invented by ancient Japanese to collect storm water for later use. The Japanese name for Rain Chain is Kusari Doi. Water slithers down the rain chain links from the roof of the house to the yard, garden or rain barrel. The rain chains can be made of copper, brass or aluminium and they range from simple chain link styles to elaborately decorated rain chain cups that can be hung from gutters in place of spouts.
Rain Chains replace the traditional downspout on a typical household gutter system. It is attached to a gutter in place of a downspout. It efficiently funnels rain water down to the ground. Not only does it looks nice, it must also be fun to watch water cascading down the chains and to hear the sound as well.
Rain Chains add unique decorative accent to your house, while maintaining the functionality of a traditional downspout. During a downpour, water can be channeled from the roof to rain barrel, conserving water in the process. I would love to have a Japanese Rain Chain but I have no need and thus no opportunity to possess one. Otherwise, it would be so fun to watch the rain in the copper rain chains as below.

Copper rain chains are fish killers– copper interferes with salmon reproduction in streams– even very small amounts.
