Soup Restaurant Yu Sheng
By peace | February 15, 2010
This is Fa Cai Yu Sheng bought at Soup Restaurant for Chinese New Year 2010.
This is Fa Cai Yu Sheng bought at Soup Restaurant. It cost S$21.80, comes with a packet of Pok Chui Cracker. The children and I like to eat the cracker. So we always buy extra packet of crackers which cost $1.20 each.
Yu Sheng means raw fish. Fa Cai Yu Sheng is what people named the dish for auspicious reason. Fa Cai means to get prosperous. Yu Sheng is eaten during the Chinese New Year. Once again, it is Chinese New Year. Today is the second day of Chinese New Year. Chinese celebrate their Reunion Dinner on the first day of Chinese New Year, which is yesterday. Nowadays, most people celebrate their reunion dinner at the restaurant. This would save a lot of hassle and the family can all eat happily (not thinking of clearing the mess later on). Another advantage of having reunion dinner at the restaurant is the family can get to eat fresh Yu Sheng!
Every year, I would buy Fa Cai Salmon Yu Sheng from Soup Restaurant. The Yu Sheng is very delicious and we can only get to eat it only once a year (since it is only available during Chinese New Year time). The only year which I had missed out on Yu Sheng is during the year 2009, which is last year, when I was pregnant with Isaac.

Yu Sheng (鱼生) is actually the chinese form of Fish Salad or Chinese New Year Fish Salad. As can be seen from the above photograph, the ingredients consists of shredded carrots, ginger, pomelo, various dried fruits/preserved food (eg. dried orange skin), crackers, peanuts, lime, sesame seeds, cucumber, sliced fish (salmon) and various spices.

Salmon is normally eaten raw by most people, especially in Japanese dishes. As for me and my family, we do not like to eat raw salmon. We always buy back the Yu Sheng and eat at the convenience of our home instead of the restaurant.
Salmon cooking in the oven
At home, I cooked the Salmon first before we ‘Lau Yu Sheng’ ((‘lo hei’) — rather than eating raw Yu Sheng). I put the Salmon in the oven for a few minutes.
After the Salmon is cooked, we mix all the ingredients into the plastic tray. Using chopsticks, we started to toss/mix the Yu Sheng. This is an interesting year to ‘lau (toss) Yu Sheng’ because there is Isaac around…

This year, I have to look after Isaac and cannot take pictures while tossing the Yu Sheng. I also take a long time to eat the Yu Sheng since I need to feed Isaac and take care of him most of the time.
