Unriddle
By peace | September 15, 2010
On the 6th day after the death of Dr Goh Keng Swee, a mysterious man came to my door…. On my birthday, at about 10.30pm, another mystery… I was about to open my birthday presents on my birthday. Just as I was gazing happily at the special packaging and taking photographs of these beautiful presents and wrapping paper, we heard the door bell rang. We were so puzzled as normal, wondering who would be pressing the bell at such a time, going to be 11pm!
Richard went to look at the eyepiece at the door. Next, we opened the door. He saw a figure ‘passing’. That was according to what he said. Until now, I had no idea what he actually saw. Anyway, we went out of the door, and went to see who actually was at the door just now… Richard told me it was HL, our neighbour. True enough, I saw HL at his door. He was standing OUTSIDE his house, his metal gate closed.
My other neighbour’s door was opened. We stood somewhere in between HL’s house and the other neigbour’s door. I asked HL if he had gone over to my house. HL answered, “No, never.” We spoke in Chinese. I observed him as I was talking to him. Next, I saw something in his hand. I asked him,”Why you take my thing?” He again said,”Never.” I knew that his words cannot be trusted, knowing his ‘mentality’.
I cannot remember the year when he first moved into the house (their current house). However, I knew the previous owner (as in who the previous owner). I also remembered the first time we saw HL urinating at the corridor. Richard caught him and scolded him. Thereafter, we talked to the mother, and got to know each other…
HL had taken a cane that was hanged outside my door. Obviously he had came to my door. But he denied. Next, his movement was very ‘suspicious’. He suddenly asked me,”Go away, go back, go back.” As he was talking, he used his hand to shun me away and his eyes looked weird… He does not seem to be his usual self of lately… Richard had noticed it…
Back home, memories of my dream about him came to my mind and what he ‘seemed’ to have ‘seen’ at the corridor…
Living in HDB flats is different from living in condominium. Over here at HDB flats, we do not have security guards. Anybody can come to our house and start knocking the door. At our corridor, we often have people who put unnecessary flyers at our gate, and we also have the rag and bone man/woman (the garangkuni) who will ask for old newspaper/clothes/hi-fi/TV. There are just so many possible ‘guests’ or surprise awaiting for you, standing at the gate… If only I have Hidden Camera then I can see what actually happened outside my door. Nowadays it is a common sight to see outside every door of the HDB house to have a surveillance camera. Although having a surveillance camera does not mean that the house would be totally safe, but it would serve as a deterrence to ‘bad guys’ (crooks and such…)
