Institute of Mental Health (Woodbridge Hospital)
The Woodbridge Hospital moved to Buangkok View in 1993 and the name Institute of Mental Health was added to reflect the emphasis on research, training and mental health education. The hospital was the last public hospital to be re-structured in 2000 and today it is part of the National Healthcare Group.
Key Milestone
1928 – The Mental Hospital was built in Yio Chu Kang. 1030 patients from the “New lunatic Asyllum” at Sepoy Lines and the ward at Pasir Panjang were transferred to the hospital.
1951 – The Mental Hospital was renamed Woodbridge Hospital.
1954 – The School of Psychiatric Nursing was set up.
1955 – The Psychiatric Social Work and Occupational Therapy departments were formed.
1956 – The Department of Psychology was set up.
1957 – Outpatient clinics were opened in Bukit Timah, Paya Lebar and Kallang Dispensaries.
1967 – Outpatient clinics at Maxwell and Queenstown Dispensaries were opened.
1972 – The first psychiatric day centre in Singapore was opened.
1975 – The first batch of recovering schizophrenic patients was admitted to View Road Hospital for rehabilitation.
1984 – The Ministry of Health mooted the proposal for a new psychiatric hospital.
1993 – Woodbridge Hospital moved from Yio Chu Kang to its new premises in Buangkok View. The new hospital was opened by the then Deputy Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong.
2000 – The Institute of Mental Health/ Woodbridge Hospital became a restructured hospital and came under the wing of the National Healthcare Group on 1 October.
2001 – The Early Psychosis Intervention Programme and the community Addictions Management Programme were set up.
2005 – The Institute of Mental Health/ Woodbridge Hospital became the first mental health institution in Asia to receive the Joint Commission International accreditation.
2006 – The Early Psychosis Intervention Programme was awarded the state of Kuwait Prize for Research in Health Promotion by the World Health Organization.
