1 April 1911: Liu Kang Born in Yongchun, Fujian province, China
1916: Migrated to Muar, Johor, where his father bought a rubber plantation.
1926: After studying at the Singapore Nanyang Overseas Chinese Middle Schoool, he enrolled in the Shanghai Academy of Fine Art.
1927: Met Chen Jen Ping, sister of his classmate Chen Ren Hao.
1928: Went to Paris to study art. During his time in Paris, his works were selected for the prestigious Salon d’Automne exhibition.
1933: Returned to Shanghai to teach Western Art at the academy.
1937: Married Chen in Shanghai. They left for a holiday in Malaya which became an extended stay when the Japanese bombed Shanghai. Marked the beginning of a 34-year teaching career in Singapore and Malaya, including Chung Cheng High School, Dunman Government Chinese Middle School and Nanyang Girls’ High School.
1946: First post-war president of the Society of Chinese Artists.
1949: Founder member of the Singapore Art Society.
1952: Visited Bali with fellow artists Chen Wen His (1908-1991), Cheong Soo Pieng (1917-1983) and Chen Chong Swee (1910-1985). Along with these artists and Georgette Chen (1907-1993), Liu defined the so-called Nanyang School of Art, which combined the influences of Western Art with a Southeast Asian sensibility.
1953: They collaborated on a landmark Bali exhibition.
1968: President of the Singapore Art Society.
1969: Appointed committee chairman of the National Day Art Exhibition.
1970: Awarded the Public Service Star
1971: Embarked on group painting trips to India, Nepal, the then-Burma and Thailand
1978: Appointed chairman of the Visual Arts Advisory Committee by the Ministry of Culture
1999: Awarded the French Order of Arts and Letters
2003: Donated a lifetime’s collection of works to the Singapore Art Museum. Its estimated worth: $18million
2004: Died at 93
