Animals

Animals provide a source of unconditional love and support. Animals don’t care if you don’t have hair and you’re confused and your fingers are old and cracked, or if you’re in a wheelchair. Animals are pretty much nonjudgmental. There’s a connectiveness with animals that may or may not be present with humans. That warm, fuzzy feeling that animals inspire can be powerful medicine for people.Animals’ ability to raise the spirits of a troubled person has been documented for years - maybe as far back as ancient Egypt.

Experts aren’t sure why, but there’s evidence that it’s more than just a lick on the nose or the cuddle of a furry, warm buddy that improves the health of pet owners and even the pets. Nevertheless, a small family of researchers in medical and veterinary schools is studying the effects of interaction between people and their pets, especially for older people. Frequently, as people age, they’re affected by loneliness, abandonment, poor economics and poor health.Using animals as companions is one way to stem depression and loneliness that people suffer as they grow older and more isolated.
